PETE Energy Services & Technology Model CurriculumBring Energy to Your Campus, Start an Energy Services & Technology Program at Your College
PETE is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that helps facilitate, augment, and broker partnerships with educational institutions, industry, and government. Our mission is to provide leadership in environmental education and training through community and technical college partnerships that include over 400 colleges nationwide.
The U.S. holds less than five percent of the world’s population but consumes 30 percent of the world’s fossil fuels each year. Practitioners in the energy services field seek to identify and implement cost-effective energy conservation measures. Given the rising cost of energy and current energy shortages, now is the perfect time to introduce energy-related curriculum on your campus.
The Partnership for Environmental Technology Education (PETE) in conjunction with our partner the Advanced Technology Environmental Education Center (ATEEC) have developed the “Energy Services and Technology Program,” a series of educational resources to help the nation’s community/technical colleges establish associated degree and certificate programs. These programs teach students how to optimize the production, delivery, and use of our energy resources. PETE conducted workshops with experienced energy services practitioners and educators to identify the knowledge and skills needed for a model curriculum.
Parts of this curriculum may be integrated into existing vocational/technical programs involved with energy use such as heating, ventilation, and air conditioning; facilities maintenance; construction; architecture; and environmental science/technology.
PETE developed three key products from this project that are available on our website http://www.ateec.org/energy/ “at no-cost for downloading” Energy Services Career Booklet, outlining the various energy technician career occupational areas, technician-level titles, and skill sets for each.
The U.S. Department of Labor’s Business Relations Group has listed the Energy Sector as one of the top 15 High Growth – High Demand Jobs in the U.S. based on industry projections, economic needs, and micro-enterprise efforts.
During this project PETE has been networking with national energy organizations, such as the Interstate Renewable Energy Council (IREC) & North American Board of Energy Practitioners (NABCEP) that have been critical links to promote the community/technical college programs and encourage their support. We have developed natural working relationships with U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Energy Smart Schools Program, Lawrence Berkley Lab’s Building Efficiency Program, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) “Energy Star Program” in order to bridge the relationship between the agency and the colleges.
This project was developed with support from the U.S. Department of Energy - Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, Office of Solar Technologies and Oakridge National Laboratory.
Even though we no longer have the financial support for the program from U.S. DOE to provide technical assistance to colleges interested in launching an Energy Services and Technology program we encourage you to access our website and download the information. Feel free to contact the PETE office with any questions.
